A team of fifth grade boys and a team of sixth grade girls from Brookside School in Allendale captured first and third place finishes, respectively, at the 2014 Bergen County Final of Battle of the Books. Students participated in teams of five, and each student on a team had to become an “authority” on three books. Some of the books this year included Artemis Fowl, Because of Mr. Terupt, Black Stallion, Boy, the BFG, and A Crooked Kind of Perfect. Students first competed in school-wide competitions, and the top two teams from the 5th and 6th grade battle attended the county final in Upper Saddle River. Brookside School students participated in a theater-in-the-round performance of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey. Students had the opportunity to play various characters in the play, including Odysseus himself. The assembly, presented to the entire school, was sponsored by the Allendale PTO. Author Cindy Callaghan visited Brookside School. 4th and 5th grade students listened to a dramatic read aloud of Mrs. Callaghan's most recent book, Lost in London, and learned that a published author's writing process is similar to their own experiences in Writing Workshop.
